Health Benefits of the Pili nut

Pili nut tree

Pili nuts are probably the healthiest nuts out there because of the following characteristics:

Pilinuts are an energy boost, making you feel saturated. The exceptionally high magnesium content also makes it a perfect natural post-workout snack for muscle recovery.

The high quantity of Vitamin E, Phosphor, Kalium, Magnesium, Zink and Iron makes it a unique pack of healthy nutrients. Improving your immune system, cholesterol levels, oxidative stress, you skin and hair.

The pilinut grows wild, on volcanic soils, which maybe explains the exceptional nutrient base and high number of minerals of the nut.

“Wild-grown” ensures the absence of any pesticide, fertiliser or artificial irrigation . This induces a slow development of the tree and its nuts, building up a quality product which can be regarded as ‘even better than organic’.

The shell of the pilinut is one the hardest nuts to crack, further protecting the nuts from any outside pollution or oxygen that convert the fats from its mono-unsaturated state to a lower quality.

The pili nut is glutenfree, free from GMO and is vegan.

Late 2020 the American Academy of Allergy stated that there were no known cases of allergic reaction to the pilinut. However, this changed over the course of 2021/22 with two cases of allergic reaction to the Pili nut (case 1 and 2). Hence, it is important that this allergenic characteristic has to be mentioned on packaging and that people with a known nut allergy take this into regard.

Pili nut production process and its impact

Pili nuts come from the pili tree, scientifically known as Canarium ovatum. These nuts are native to Southeast Asia, particularly in the Philippines, where they are cultivated primarily in the volcanic region of Bicol. Below is a general overview of the process of obtaining pili nuts:

Pili nuts mainly come from wild growing trees. These pili trees are grown in the tropical climate with well-drained volcanic soil. The trees thrive in regions with high humidity and rainfall. They typically take several years to mature before they start bearing fruit.

Harvesting: Pili nuts are typically harvested once the fruits (known as drupes) are mature. The drupes resemble large olives or small avocados and contain the pili nut inside. Harvesting is often done manually by climbing the trees and picking the drupes. Some also use poles to reach higher branches.

Processing: After harvesting, the outer shell of the drupe is removed to reveal the pili nut inside. The nuts are then extracted and any remaining pulp is cleaned away. The nuts are then sun-dried to reduce moisture content.

Cracking: Pili nuts have a hard shell that needs to be cracked to access the edible kernel. This can be done using various methods, including mechanical cracking machines or traditional methods that involve carefully cracking the shell with a tool.

Sorting and Grading: Once the nuts are extracted, they are sorted and graded based on size and quality. This process ensures that only high-quality nuts are packaged for sale.

Packaging: The sorted and graded pili nuts are then packaged for distribution and sale. Depending on the intended market, they may be sold in bulk or packaged in smaller quantities for retail.

Distribution: Pili nuts are distributed to local markets, grocery stores, or exported to international markets. In regions where pili trees are abundant, local communities may play a significant role in the distribution process.

Pili nut trees are typically owned by local Filipino households making it a huge impact crop, providing income to thousands of Filipino households! In the process thereafter, a large number of people are involved as well, all receiving a fair wage.
